I couldn’t get into estaz. I couldn’t finish this book. I would not recommend this to someone looking for an entertaining read- but I would recommend it to someone looking to learn about Michelangelo and some of his contemporaries.

Not to find out the ending, but to be finished with the book.

There are no discussion topics on this book yet. For example, he spent many years living in Italy while working on The Agony and the Ecstasy. It rambled its way through the same cycle over and over again. Book was originally published infor reference. Certainly not worth reading again, and if you have a short attention span, not worth your time at all. I am more informed of Michelangelo now that I have read the bookbut fortun I enjoyed the side reading I did with this book more than the book itself.

My wife loved this book. It also uses fantastic metaphors and you really get a feel …more I personally wouldn’t call it that, but it is epic in the sense that it goes into detail. I’m a sucker for historical fiction, so even though this fictional story of the life of Michelangelo was pretty dated, melodramatic, long, and goofy, I still kind of liked it.

It is only for those who would be miserable without it. But if you’re expecting coherent characters and something resembling a narrative arc look elsewhere.

And yes, I learned edtaz sorts of things about Rome, history, Popes, art, Michelangelo, etc. It has many great ideas on what counts as a classic. Lists with This Book.

While an interesting premise for a novel – a fictional biography of Michelanglo – the execution was poorly done. The Italian government lauded Stone with several honorary awards during this period for his cultural achievements highlighting Italian history.

The answer to that question is: I can postulate about the publishing industry’s negative effects on our culture’s self-perception until the cows come home, but the reason I picked this book up is because I cannot remove myself from pop culture.

Agonie si extaz (volumul 1) by Irving Stone

It was tedious and poorly written. Later I realized that I would have preferred a textbook, just the facts and nice pictures. Cartea exfaz in prim-plan si marile iubiri ale artistului. Want to Read saving…. Italy Florence Italy Rome Italy. I’m guilty of always thinking that if wi book i Totally boring! While Stone clearly did his r I appreciated learning more about Michelangelo whom I’d never really read anything aboutbut the pedestrian way this book was written kind of killed the intrigue for me.

Every opportunity to delve into the emotional life of an incredibly complex and intelligent character was missed.

I will be watching those History Channel episodes about the Medici, though. It also uses fantastic metaphors and you really get a feel for the era agonue Michelangelo’s fascination for the human body.

Am volumul 2 in brate care prezinta perioada premergatoare lui David. I tried really hard to read this book.

In the past, my attention span for books that are mostly narrative has been amazing: This is not often a bad thing in my eyes but in this book it sucked. I couldn’t find any redeeming factor. While I give Stone or his research team props for the astonishing amount of historical research and reference that went into this work, the writing is terrible.

After awhile, however, I was disgusted with the whole world in the book. I think if I was an art buff or a Renaissance historian this book would have been a lot more interesting, as Michelangelo lived through some turbulent Italian history and of course made great art. That could make for an interesting book if kept restricted, rather than this massive book which factually details every conversation Michaelangelo has with the wool merchants guild and at the quarry where he went to dig marbles.

Madalina rated it it was amazing Dec 11, I chose the book to read with one of the Goodreads groups, but seemed to be the only one reading. Preview — Agonie si extaz by Irving Stone.

For me the best part was reading about the Medici family, and not Michelangelo who was sort of a one-dimensional firecracker of a guy who just loved to sculpt marble Sooo maybe its just that you need to be about a billion times smarter than me to enjoy this book, the premise sure seemed interesting enough Also, too many side characters with similar names. Stone lived in Italy for years visiting many of the locations in Rome and Florence, worked in marble quarries, and apprenticed himself to a marble sculptor.

He sees himself as sculptor, an artist of the highest caliber. I enjoyed reading it.
