In the first chapter of the Monologion Anselm argues that there must be some one thing that is supremely good. But if it exists in the understanding, it must also exist in reality. Despite these distractions and troubles, Anselm continued to write. But I do not doubt that all this solid world, with its parts, just as we see, consists of earth, water, fire, and air.


Therefore, since truth altogether excludes the supposition that there are more beings than one, through which all things exist, that being, through which all exist, must be one.

But how could that which had no existence, assist anything in coming into existence? The elder cleric took exception to its lack of appeals to monologuon and authority.

For none can doubt that created substances exist far differently in themselves than in our knowledge. It follows, therefore, that all other goods are good through another being than that which they themselves are, and this being alone is good through itself.

The rebel angels chose to abandon justice in an attempt to gain happiness for themselves, whereas the good angels chose to persevere in justice even if it meant less happiness. Hence, it does not so exist, as a whole, in all places and at all times that it exists by parts in individual places and times. But the attributes which, taken each by itself, reduce an essence to less and less degrees of existence, if assumed in order, lead it to greater and greater degrees.

For this Being it is the same to be just that it is to be justice; and so with regard to attributes that can be expressed in the same way: More truly, then, do all things exist through this very being, which is one, than through these, which are more than one, which, without this one, cannot exist. What can and what cannot be predicated of the Supreme Being substantively. Therefore, the consideration of this expression should not, in my opinion, be carelessly passed over.

Then, let him who can conceive of a time when this began to be true, or when it was not true, namely, that something was destined to be; or when this shall cease to be true, and shall not be true, namely, that something has existed. But its eternity is nothing else than itself. Anselm argues for many propositions of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, using only philosophical arguments, rather than the authority of the bible.


Therefore, the supreme Nature could be created neither by itself, nor by another; nor could itself or an other be the anseln whence it should be created; nor did monllogion assist mknologion in any way; nor did anything assist it to be what it was not before.

BUT how can objects so different as the creative and the created being be expressed by one Word, especially since that Word itself is coeternal with him who expresses them, while the created world is not coeternal with him?
