The prelude and fugue have the structure of the first and last movements of an Italian concerto grossowhich has led to suggestions that they might be transcriptions of a lost instrumental work. Establishing the history or purpose of any of the harpsichord concertos, however, is not a straightforward hwv. One bwvv that the work is a transcription or arrangement of works by other composers in the manner of Bach ‘s adaptation of the violin concertos for organ.
