I loved Jack and all he stood for and his love for Nikki.

I felt emotionally attached to her and I liked her. I took a star off because I’m really not that into YA paranormal books anymore and this felt too close to that.

Everneath Series

This was a creepy, fabulous twist on the myth of the underworld, mixing Persephone’s story with Orpheus and Eurydice. He isn’t around just to make the “good guy” look extra nice with his boy next door, award winning smile.

I felt compassion for her, felt the clock ticking away, felt the inexorability of her evernewth. For evernfath, that’s not a usual response. The relationship between Cole and Nikki was not love exactly; it was more a relation of decency from both sides. I really really liked this book.

I also find it incredibly implausible that Jack would be so accepting of Nikki’s story about where she really was over the past six months, when any other person would have and should have stared at her and sent her to a psychiatric ward.

Like for someone grieving over her dead mother, I didn’t catch much of Nikki’s grief. There were a couple of stories that were fine but forgettable, some that were terrible, one evverneath had so many made-up fantasy words that it might as well have been written in Finnish, and a cute little ten year old girl with quite a good alien abduction story. Yes, he’s a musician, and smoking hot, and the one with powers, but Nikki’s heart is clearly with Jack. I quite liked this setup, but it made for getting information on the Everlings and Everneath a little bit at a time. Thanks for accepting the friend request, currently half way through Everneath, and you’ve got a fan for life in me!

It was definitely interesting and I read it exceptionally quickly. However, Nikki also has other things going for her, like Jack. You’d think that sort of thing would change a person’s perspective. I don’t know, it seems pretty one-sided right now but there’s clearly more books to come.

I was intrigued by the whole concept of this Everneath, a place almost like hell but rather than being a place for sinners, it’s a place for Everlivings – who drain souls for energy – and the souls that have been drained.
