There is an abstract quality to the exposition, certainly the quality of selflessness, so it is a relief that the texts themselves are surprisingly short — one page, two pages, three pages — seldom more.
There are a couple of unique practices but very few given, mainly in gathering attention such as in focusing on body parts and intoning ‘I am’ etc.

I prize it because of the quality of its contents, and so I have reserved a space for it on the bookshelf in my study where I display the spines of a limited number of select volumes about the Work that were published over the last three-quarters of a century. He can either report on what the author says in the order of the excerpts from the notebooks that appear here, and thereby write at considerable length; or he can summarize the approach that the author takes, and thereby risk sounding somewhat platitudinous.

There are more examples of where she has gone off into her own philosophy throughout the book, which is fine, though salzmxnn needs to be acknowledged by some of her students rather than the usual story of how the author was the ‘appointed heir and custodian’ of Gurdjieff’s work.

This would create a book of texts of homilies, except for the fact that four of the subsections have not four texts apiece but three. Want to Read saving…. Without wishing for a different quality in myself, to turn toward my higher possibilities, I will have nothing to lean on, nothing to support work.
Train the attention to notice sensation. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. A number of people—including Needleman—think she fe a realized person. The book is largely impractical again to my disappointment re, and in some parts drones on about one’s inability to ‘do’, to focus, to gather attention, to unify the centres, to become more conscious etc.
My only complaint is that De Salzmann is, salzjann times, slightly less interesting to read than Gurdjieff himself; I found myself picking up his writings at times instead reallity paying attention to reading hers. Some nice work is written about self-observation and self-remembering and the need for it. Gurdjieff —Jeanne de Salzmann was charged with carrying on his teachings of spiritual transformation. Jeanne de Because of a friend, and because of the work of Jacob Needleman, I’ve become interested in the GurdIjieff work, which was one of the “new religions” of the 20th century.
The book is a durable and handsome product, worthy of the muse or saint of printing and publishing, if there is one.
An entirely decent companion to Gurdjieff’s writings.
